FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — Retailer Gorman’s Home Furnishings & Interior Design is consolidating operations, a move that will involve the closure of its Troy and Southfield, Michigan, showrooms.
The company said it will keep its Novi showroom and Farmington Hills Three-Day Clearance Center and adjoining warehouse.
The Southfield location is 23,000 square feet and Troy is about 21,000 square feet. By comparison, the flagship Novi location is about 50,000 square feet and the Farmington Hills Clearance Center is about 12,000 square feet.
The showrooms that are closing are located at 1465 W. Big Beaver Road in Troy and 29145 Telegraph Road in Southfield. The ones that will remain open are Gorman’s Furniture of Novi, 27800 Novi Road, and Gorman’s Three-Day Clearance Center and warehouse, 23231 Industrial Park Drive, Suite A, in Farmington Hills.
The company said this is aimed “at focusing its people, inventory and resources on a more sustainable operating structure and preserve Gorman’s future as a destination for high-quality home furnishings and interior design.”
The company has long focused on brands that resonate in the marketplace, particularly at upper-middle to upper-end price points. Featured brands include Bernhardt, Lexington, Hooker, Craftmaster, Stickley, Sherrill Furniture, Stressless, Hancock & Moore and Caracole, to name several. Other popular brands include Hickory Chair, Hickory White, A|R|T, Fairfield Chair, Natuzzi, Canadel, Century, Wesley Allen and Vanguard.
“Gorman’s has always been a destination business and has built a reputation around quality, style, design expertise and long-term relationships,” said Jonathan Moray, chief executive officer of Gorman’s Home Furnishings & Interior Design. “We believe it is important to maintain a physical showroom where customers can experience quality furnishings, discover new ideas and work directly with talented interior designers. By concentrating our operation around Novi and Farmington Hills, we can continue serving customers throughout metro Detroit and Michigan while building a more focused foundation for the future.”
The company said the Novi location will be its primary full-line showroom and interior design center, while the Farmington Hills clearance center and warehouse will support clearance business, deliveries, customer service and support and other ongoing needs.
The closings are expected to impact 31 of its 71 employees, the company told Home News Now.
Throughout this transition, the company said it hopes “to retain key employees, maintain current compensation where possible and potentially expand the remaining operation.” It noted that it will communicate individual staffing decisions and transition details directly to employees.
Gorman’s said it will continue fulfilling current orders, completing scheduled deliveries and supporting active interior design projects. It noted that customers do not need to take immediate action unless contacted by the company.
The Troy and Southfield locations plan to conclude regular business Monday, Aug. 3, and temporarily close for inventory tagging and sale preparation. A private sale for invited previous customers will take place Thursday, Aug. 13, and Friday, Aug. 14. The public store-closing sale begins Saturday, Aug. 15.
