by LATROBE, Penn. — A 107-year-old family business will close permanently when Weiss Furniture concludes its total liquidation that opens to the public September 3.
Owner Dalia Dunhoff announced she will retire after the going-out-of-business sale. Dunhoff has chosen leading furniture promotional sales specialists Planned Furniture Promotions (PFP) to handle the final sale event.
“The Weiss and Dunhoff families have built something truly special in Latrobe,” said Tom Liddell, senior vice president of PFP. “For more than a century, they have served their customers with integrity while giving back to the community that supported them. It is a privilege for our team to work alongside them during this final chapter.”
Weiss Furniture was founded by father and son Joseph and Hymen Weiss in 1919. By treating customers fairly and with kindness—particularly during difficult economic times—the Weiss family earned the trust of the community and built relationships that lasted for generations. Hymen acquired full ownership in 1937 upon his father’s death and his wife, Freida, assisted with the business by providing interior design services.
The Weiss and Dunhoff families became connected through marriage, and in 1950 Hymen’s brother-in-law, William Dunhoff, joined the business as a partner. Two years later, they oversaw the company’s relocation and expansion to a 23,000-square-foot showroom at the corner of Depot Street and Lincoln Ave., where it stands today. Upon Hymen’s retirement in 1973, William took over the business and was later joined by his sons, David and Richard.
Richard acquired full ownership in 2007 and, alongside his wife, Dalia, carried the family business forward for the next 16 years. With a personal passion for art and design, Richard took great pride in preserving Weiss Furniture’s reputation for quality furnishings and personal service. He was known for treating everyone with respect and had a natural ability to turn customers into friends. After Richard passed away three years ago, Dalia continued as sole owner, carrying on the family’s legacy until making the decision to retire.
Beyond the showroom, the Dunhoff family built a legacy of community service. Three generations of Dunhoff women—Gladys, Diane and Deidra, known throughout the community as “the ladies of Weiss”—volunteered for years at the Latrobe Hospital Gift Shop, where Gladys alone devoted more than 50 years of service. The family was also active in the Greater Latrobe-Laurel Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, reflecting a longstanding commitment to the community they served.
