Security breach halts some Bassett Furniture operations

Company said that it detected unauthorized occurrences on part of its IT systems that have impacted its ability to fulfill orders

BASSETT, Va. — Full-line furniture resource Bassett Furniture Industries reported what it described as unauthorized occurrences on part of its information technology systems that resulted in the company halting operations at its manufacturing plants.

The company reported the situation on Monday in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Upon detecting the security issue on July 10, it said, it began taking steps to “contain, assess and remediate the incident including beginning an investigation, activating its incident response plan and shutting down some systems.”

While the plants have been shut temporarily, the company said that its retail stores and e-commerce platform are open, and that customers are able to place orders and purchase available merchandise. However, it noted that its ability to fulfill orders is currently impacted.

“The company is working to bring the impacted portions of its IT systems back online and implement workarounds for certain offline operations with the aim of reducing disruption to its ability to serve its retail, e-commerce and wholesale customers,” Bassett said in the SEC filing. “At this time, the company does not believe personal information from consumers was compromised. The company continues to work diligently to respond to and mitigate the impact from the incident.”

The company added that as an investigation continues, the full scope, nature and impact of the incident remain unknown. It also said that the incident has had and is likely to continue to have a material impact on its business operations until the recovery efforts are completed. However, it noted that it is currently unknown whether the incident is likely to materially impact its financial condition or the results of its operations.
