Legends Furniture shifts all mattress production to U.S., expands Vietnam upholstery production

TOLLESON, Ariz. — Full-line furniture manufacturer and importer Legends Furniture has recently completed an overhaul of its Vietnam manufacturing operations that has allowed it to transition the 200,000-square-foot plant from mattress to stationary upholstery production.

The company has been producing mattresses in Tolleson, Ariz., for just over a year and will now produce its entire private label and branded Remedy mattress lines at that facility.

Legends also has been making upholstery in the Vietnam plant for about a year, producing mostly private label product for OEM accounts. Along with this product, the plant also will begin producing new Legends sofa and loveseat sets it introduces at the April High Point Market.

The Vietnam plant has seven CNC machines that handle frame construction and about 78 sewing stations. While the bulk of production will continue to be for large OEM customers, the company will produce its own stationary sofa loveseat sets that retail from $1,299 to $1,499, Senior Vice President, Sales Tim Donk told Home News Now.

The three new stationary groups also are designed to ship in smaller parcels via UPS. In turn, this allows more groups to fit on a container, which is expected to help minimize the high costs of shipping the goods from overseas.

The Coronado upholstery group is one of three Legends is producing in Vietnam for its own upholstery line.

“Few are the factories that can make a UPS-able sofa that looks great, sits great, and is easy to assemble; but through innovative design and years of trial and error, we now have this down to a science,” said Chris Dockter, CEO of Legends/In2rest. “With the freight and shipping challenges we all face today, we believe our UPS-able sofas are the next ‘Bed in a Box’.”

In addition to sofas and loveseats, the Vietnam factory produces upholstered beds. Accent chairs, ottomans and motion upholstery lines also are in development, the company said.

“With the transition of our mattress production from Vietnam to the United States, and our decades of experience in furniture design and manufacturing, this just made perfect sense for the company and our workers,” said Marketing Manager Cyndi Dart.

The new Legends sofas will be available to ship on full containers from the factory in roughly 45 days from the time of order. Eventually the company also plans to offer mixed containers of the product from its consolidation warehouse in Vietnam.

At market, Legends will show these and other new products in its showroom in space C601 of the International Home Furnishings Center.
