Smith Leonard: Furniture orders up 8% from May 2025

Survey of major furniture resources said that shipments also were up 1% from a year ago

HIGH POINT — Residential furniture orders and shipments were up compared with May 2025 according to the latest Furniture Insights report from Smith Leonard.

Furniture orders total $2.36 billion, up 8% from $2.2 billion in May 2025, with two-thirds of survey participants reporting increases versus decreases. They were up 13% from $2.05 billion in April.

By comparison, shipments totaled $2.2 billion, up 1% from $2.17 billion in May 2025, with one half of respondents reporting increases. They were flat compared with April, the report said.

Backlogs totaled $2.5 billion, up about 5% from both $2.4 billion in May 2025 and $2.36 billion in April.

Other highlights of the report were as follows:

+ Receivable levels were down 5% from May 2025 and down 4% from April 2026

+ Inventories were up 3% from May 2025 and down 1% compared to April

+ The number of factory and warehouse employees was down 5% from May 2025 and flat with April

+ Payroll expenses were up 1% compared with May 2025 and down 3% from April.
