Room & Board recalls 500 bunk beds

Units not assembled correctly with proper screws pose a fall and injury hazard

WASHINGTON — Home News Now 125 retailer Room & Board has recalled 500 bunk beds because of a fall and injury hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

The agency said that some of the retailer’s Griffin duo bunk beds were not properly assembled by Room & Board at the time of delivery, adding that brackets lacking set screws can create the risk of collapse.

Two incidents of the units collapsing have been reported, although no injuries were associated with those incidents, the CPSC said.

The recall alerts wholesalers, retailers and consumers about the safety issues and incidents that can result from units that are not properly assembled. The issue is particularly sensitive as it involves a piece of furniture used primarily by children.

This particular recall involves the Griffin Duo twin-over-full bunk beds, which were made in the U.S. and sold at Room & Board stores nationwide and online at from May 2013 through May 2017 for between $2,000 and $2,200.

The beds are made from cherry or maple wood and have a label on the footboard identifying the product as the Griffin Duo Bunk Bed.

Consumers have been advised to immediately stop using the recalled bunk beds and check each of its eight brackets to make sure that the set screws have been installed. Those that have been installed in each bracket do not need new set screws.

If any brackets are missing the set screws, the agency said that they must be installed before the bed is used again.

The retailer is contacting all known purchasers directly with information on how to inspect and repair the beds and also is providing free set screw repair kits for consumers upon request. For those customers that are unable to perform an inspection and repair, Room & Board will send a representative to their home to inspect for and install any missing set screws free of charge.

The retailer also has provided a link to the following instructional repair video.

For additional information, consumers can contact Room & Board at 800-301-9720 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Saturday through Sunday, email, or online at or and click on “Product Recalls” at the bottom of the page.
