WASHINGTON — The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has expanded the previously announced recall of a chest of drawers sold at Walmart that poses a tip-over and entrapment hazard that can harm children.
Some 250 additional units have been added to the recall of 165,000 of these units announced previously.
And while no incidents or injuries have been reported as of the Aug 27 notice, it lets people know that there are more units to be accounted for in consumers’ homes. It also serves to educate individuals about the initial recall in case they missed it the first time around.
The recall involves the Mainstays nine-drawer fabric chests, which the CPSC said are unstable if they are not anchored to the wall. The agency said they also violate the mandatory safety standard as required by the STURDY Act. Noncompliance potentially can cause injury or death to children resulting from a tip-over incident.
Made in Vietnam, these units primarily were sold in Walmart stores around the U.S. and online at Walmart.com from September 2023 through March 2026 for about $80.
The CPSC said that the additional units were sold to consumers following the initial recall through the following liquidators: OMG California Community, of Riverside, California; Threads of Fenton of Fenton, Michigan; Golden Cone Electronic Inc., of Elkhart, Indiana; and ReturnPro, of Miami.
“This reannouncement is intended to alert consumers who purchased the dressers from the above liquidators that the dressers have been recalled because they pose tip-over and entrapment hazards,” the CPSC said.
These clothing storage units are described as having a black metal frame and nine brown or black fabric drawers with handles. Made between September 2023 and December 2025, they are about 40 inches long, 13.75 inches wide and 45 inches tall and weigh 32 pounds.
The Tracking/Lot and the manufacture date in MM/YYYY format are printed on a label under the dresser’s top panel of the dresser. “Mainstays 9-Drawer Fabric Dresser” is printed on the product order receipt and packaging, the CPSC said.
Consumers have been advised to stop using the recalled dressers immediately if they are not anchored to the wall and place them in an area that children cannot access.
They also can contact Walmart for a full refund. To receive this refund, consumers will be asked to return the drawers of the unit to any Walmart store and dispose of the dressers’ frame according to local and state regulations.
