Peter Keith is a managing director and senior research analyst at Piper Sandler covering hardlines and broadlines companies. Prior to rejoining Piper Sandler in 2011, Keith worked as a senior analyst at JMP Securities. Previously, he worked at Piper Sandler as a research associate on the hardlines retail team from 2005 to 2009. From 1997 to 2003, he worked at RS Investments in San Francisco, where he led the company’s institutional and retail mutual fund sales effort. Keith was awarded Best Up-and-Comer in the Retailing/Hardlines category in Institutional Investor magazine’s annual poll for 2010. Here, he talks about his research in bedding and how recent increases in that segment could mark the start of continued, sustained growth. “It really feels like the industry has bottomed out here, and I think that’s encouraging,” he said. He also shares insights on the housing market and what he perceives as a pickup in Memorial Day advertising on the retail side. A key takeaway is that when businesses “start to spend a little bit of money on the advertising side, they get a little bit of benefit,” which he said is having more companies jumping into the advertising pool, and this, in turn, helps increase consumer demand.
