Registrations from large retailers were up 3% during the period
HIGH POINT — October High Point Market registrations were down about 2% from April, according to information released by the High Point Market Authority on Wednesday.
The market authority reported the drop at its board meeting held at the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame building downtown on the last day of the fall market.
Officials indicated that the 2% decrease is perhaps far less than some expected given the circumstances taking place both in and outside the state.

“Coming into this market I think we were all nervous about what market was going to be,” said Tammy Covington-Nagem, president and chief executive officer of the High Point Market Authority. “We are a week away from an election, we have seen a hurricane and flooding come through the western part of our state, we have dipped our toe in a port strike, you name it. I think the macro economics were not in our favor coming into this October market.”
“We are still registering today and we know this last day is not where the majority of the registrations will be seen,” she added. “So that is where we feel we will probably come in from a registration standpoint.”
She also noted that attendance from large retailers was up by 3% and that press attendance also was up compared with the April market.
International attendance was down, which also was not a surprise to market officials.
“We did see fewer people from outside the U.S., which I think again is where we are globally,” she said. “That was probably to be expected.”
But overall, she noted that the response from exhibitors was that market for the most part was positive.
“I think the reports were good,” she said. “Even all of you coming in today have talked about that it was a good market and that it was positive.
“Across the board, we heard from exhibitors that this market exceeded their expectations. So we are happy to report where we are and are very excited to start working on April.”
