HIGH POINT – Doris ‘Dot’ Royals Coggin died peacefully Sunday, June 11, at Pennybyrn Nursing Home following a period of declining health. She was 95.
Mrs. Coggin was described as an icon in High Point’s furniture industry, having worked side by side with her husband, Thayer Coggin, to build a successful furniture manufacturing company. She worked in both accounting and public relations for the organization and in these roles helped her husband build the historic brand.
Together they also partnered with Milo Baughman to create a distinctive line of midcentury furniture that has been sold around the world.
The daughter of the late Lavada May Burton Royals and Henry Clay Royals, she was born on April 6, 1928, and was a native of Randolph County, North Carolina. She graduated from Trinity High School and attended business school in High Point during World War II.

In addition to her work at Thayer Coggin, she was active in numerous civic and community organizations, including serving as a member of the High Point University Board of Trustees; a member of the Red Hat Club; a member of the Till & Toil Garden Club and a member of the Mid-Week Study Club. She also was a longtime member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
“Mrs. Coggin is remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother,” the family wrote in her obituary. “She was a fun-loving wife, mother, and friend – enjoying travel, clothing, design and fashion. She was known for her outgoing personality and her dedication to her family and her friends and co-workers at Thayer Coggin.”
She is survived by three children, Christopher Thayer Coggin and his wife, Erin, of High Point; Royale Coggin Wiggin and her husband, Mike, of Davidson County; and Clark Alan Coggin and his partner, Brad Crone, of Raleigh.
She also is survived by five grandchildren including: Elizabeth Coggin Riley of Raleigh, Christopher Coggin of Charlotte, Lauren Coggin of High Point and Dr. Bruce Wiggin of Raleigh. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren including Jimmy and Charlotte Riley of Raleigh and Thayer and Wells Coggin of Charlotte.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church with visitation following the service.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nursing staff and caretakers who provided care from High Point Regional Hospital, Pennybyrn, and Home Instead for Mrs. Coggin in the final stages of her life.
The family recommends memorial gifts in lieu of flowers to be sent to Mrs. Coggin’s favorite charities including the Thayer & Dot Coggin Scholarship Fund at High Point University, High Point Regional Hospital, Pennybyrn and Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
