TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. — Kincaid Upholstery officially marked a new chapter in its history with a ribbon-cutting celebration at its Taylorsville manufacturing facility, commemorating both continued investment in North Carolina craftsmanship and a return of ownership to members of the Kincaid family.
The event celebrates the transition of Kincaid Upholstery to new ownership under KMC Furniture LLC, led by CEO Max Dyer, Kincaid family member Kim Kincaid, and Chief Commercial Officer Cole Mehlman, following La-Z-Boy Incorporated’s strategic divestiture of the business earlier this year.
La-Z-Boy announced plans in late 2025 to exit certain “non-core” operations, including Kincaid Upholstery, as part of a broader effort to streamline its portfolio and focus on its vertically integrated branded business. The transaction was completed on January 30, 2026, with the Taylorsville facility continuing operations under the new ownership group.
Today, Kincaid Upholstery employs more than 100 associates and remains a cornerstone of domestic, artisan upholstery manufacturing.
“This business is built on a deep commitment to domestic, bench-made upholstery that is both style-forward and uncompromising in quality,” said Cole Mehlman, Chief Commercial Officer. We proudly champion brick-and-mortar retailers and designers who are at the forefront of bringing great design to consumers across the country and beyond.”
Mehlman also noted, “The organization is structured to be nimble and responsive, and with the Kincaid heritage as our keystone, relationships, culture and long-term value are just as important as the products we create.”
The Taylorsville facility itself holds deep roots in North Carolina furniture manufacturing. Originally part of Alexvale Furniture, founded in July 1976, the plant has long been associated with premium craftsmanship and skilled labor. Among those in attendance was Ron Roseman, one of Alexvale’s original founders, underscoring the continuity of heritage and expertise that defines the operation today.
“This milestone represents both a homecoming and a bold step forward,” said Max Dyer, CEO of Kincaid Upholstery. “We are honored to carry forward the Kincaid legacy with renewed focus, investing in our people, our product and our partners. Our commitment is simple: deliver exceptional, American-made upholstery while strengthening relationships with retailers and designers across the country.”
In his remarks, Dyer celebrated his uncle, Steve Kincaid, who led Kincaid Furniture Company through significant growth in both workforce and production. He served the company as president and, eventually, added to his responsibilities as president of La-Z-Boy Casegoods. His industry leadership is often touted as a model for other business executives. He helped create the High Point Market Authority, served as president of both the American Home Furnishings Alliance and the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame and was a recipient of City of Hope’s Spirit of Life Award. He was one of the youngest inductees into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame.
The ribbon cutting brought together a range of local and state leaders, including:
- Blair Eddins, NC House of Representatives (District 94)
- Eddie Settle, NC Senate (District 36)
- Larry Yoder, Chairman, Alexander County Board of Commissioners
- George Holleman, Mayor of Taylorsville
Following the ribbon cutting, the company hosted a celebration for employees, friends and family, recognizing the skilled workforce that continues to define Kincaid Upholstery’s reputation for craftsmanship and quality.
Looking ahead, the company is preparing to showcase its latest introductions at the upcoming April High Point Market, where Kincaid Upholstery will exhibit in their IHFC showroom, C-926.
