Retailer Sam Levitz ceases operations after 71 years

TUCSON, Ariz. — Home News Now 125 retailer Sam Levitz Furniture is ceasing all operations with plans to close all its stores as part of a final liquidation sale.

The news marks the final chapter in a retail story dating back to 1910 when Richard Levitz started selling furniture, appliances and other products in a warehouse type of store based in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

His son Sam Levitz moved to Tucson in 1941 where he had a career in photography. He opened Sam Levitz Furniture in 1953. After marrying in 1964, he and his wife ran the business and later three of their six children joined them in the family business along with several of their grandchildren.

Their daughters Kandie and Kathi were involved in management and marketing roles and their eldest son and current owner Sam R. became president in 1991.

Sam Levitz Furniture begins its final sale at its two Tucson locations on Oct. 3, liquidating all merchandise across a combined 120,000 square feet of showroom space. Well-known name brands include Benchmade, Four Hands, Kuka, Leather Italia, Parker Living, Sealy, Stearns & Foster, Steve Silver and Tempur-Pedic.
