Retailer James Antony Home files for Chapter 7 bankruptcy

Upper-end furniture dealer has an estimated 100-199 creditors, according to Aug. 1 court filing

DALLAS — Upper-end furniture retailer James Antony Home has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the latest industry dealer to fall victim to challenges of soft demand for home furnishings.

The company, which has a single location in Dallas, filed its petition on Aug. 1 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

In its petition, it cited assets of $100,000 to $500,000 and liabilities of $1 million to $10 million. The petition also said it had an estimated 100 to 199 creditors.

A Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows individuals and businesses to liquidate their assets in order to pay off such creditors in a timely manner.

However, the filing states that there is no property that appears to be immediately available to pay creditors and instructs those parties not to file a claim at this time. If that changes, the clerk of court will send a notice to creditors instructing them of the deadline and how to file their individual proof of claim.

The company’s vendor list is a who’s who of the luxury furniture segment, with well-known brands such as John-Richard, Lexington Home Brands, AICO, Bernhardt, Braxton Culler, Century, Chaddock, Hooker Furniture, Sarreid, Sherrill, Theodore Alexander and Uttermost, to name several. According to the Dallas Design District website, the retailer in the past offered as many as 200 brands of furniture and accessories.

A meeting of creditors is planned for 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 23. The meeting is being held via Zoom at zoom.us/join with a meeting ID of 605-260 5701. The meeting passcode is 09234431993. Information on the meeting is also available by calling 469-218-9131.
