QUEBEC – RTA manufacturer Bestar is recalling 182,000 wall beds that have been associated with the death of a 79-year-old woman who succumbed to her injuries after one of the beds fell on her in July 2018.
In addition, the company has received reports of 60 other incidents that have resulted in bruising and other injuries after the wall beds detached and fell on consumers.
The recall includes 129,000 wall beds sold in the U.S. and another 53,000 that were sold in Canada.
The models affected include the Nebula, PUR, Versatile, Edge, Cielo, Audrea, Lumina, Orion and Novello full and queen-sized wall beds. They were sold at Wayfair.com, Costco.com, Cymax.com and Amazon.com between June 2014 through March 2022 for between $1,650 and $2,200.
In announcing the recall earlier this month, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission advised consumers to immediately stop using the units and contact the company to have them inspected and possibly reinstalled. Bestar is also contacting all known purchasers directly.
If the bed requires reinstallation, consumers have been advised to use a professional installer. The CPSC said that Bestar will reimburse consumers for reinstallation costs, which are estimated between $170 and $207 for Above Top Shelf wall beds and from $338 to $414 for Below Top Shelf wall beds.
Consumers who cannot find a quote in that range have been advised to contact Bestar for help in finding an installer. Consumers who can’t find a reinstallation in those ranges will be reimbursed for “reasonable” additional costs as long as they provide documentation.
