LOS ANGELES — A number of furniture and retail brands have begun efforts to provide support for victims of the wildfires that have ravaged Southern California this month.
Home improvement retailers Lowe’s and Home Depot also have responded with their individual support. For example, The Home Depot Foundation has committed $1 million for humanitarian and disaster relief efforts as well as long-term recovery and future mitigation in affected Southern California communities.
Among the organizations it is helping is World Central Kitchen, which continues to distribute meals to citizens, first responders and other emergency workers at more than a dozen distribution locations. It also is supporting Operation Blessing, which has distributed necessities such as water, solar lanterns, hygiene kits and meals, and Convoy of Hope, which also is distributing essential items such as food, water and hygiene products.
Other organizations Home Depot is assisting include the American Red Cross, which has provided emergency shelter and meals as well as cots, blankets and water and Toolbank Disaster Services in its efforts to support victims of the wildfires.
In addition, individual Home Depot stores in Southern California have donated water, masks and other essential supplies to nonprofits that are supporting those in need. The company noted that to ensure customers have access to the products they need in-store, “The Home Depot coordinated with our supplier partners and distribution centers to deploy dozens of truckloads of supplies to The Home Depot’s stores in the area, which stand ready to support their communities now and as they rebuild.”
“When disaster strikes, The Home Depot Foundation is here to help our communities,” said Erin Izen, the foundation’s executive director. “We’re working with our nonprofit partners to evaluate the immediate needs in impacted areas and get essential relief supplies into the community as quickly as possible.”
North Carolina-based Lowe’s is contributing $2 million to assist first responders and nonprofits that are supporting evacuations, providing emergency shelter and distributing needed supplies. The funding will initially specifically support the following areas:
+ Providing more than 560 fire response totes to Covina and West Hills evacuation centers to help families collect and clean items from their homes. The 27-gallon tote includes cleaning supplies, trash bags and a flashlight.
+ Providing fresh drinking water and Gatorade to local firehouses, as well as the United Service Organization that is providing support to deployed national guard members.
+ Providing supplies to help the Azura Fire Department replace a roof blown off in a windstorm.
+ Delivering 22 pallets of horse feed to the Fairplex and Pico Rivera sports arenas that are boarding horses because of the fires.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in harm’s way and with the tireless first responders who are battling the fires around the clock,” said Marvin Ellison, Lowe’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Lowe’s is here to help our resilient neighbors as they continue to face unprecedented destruction and begin the long road to recovery.”
Scandinavian furniture, home décor and lifestyle brand Teak New York announced its own relief efforts in conjunction with the scheduled Jan. 23 opening of its second retail location, a 1,265-square-foot Los Angeles area pop-up shop along South Robertson Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
“As Teak New York joins the Los Angeles community during the devastating and widespread fires, the brand is eager to give back to its neighbors and help those who have been impacted,” the company said, noting that starting on Jan. 23, it will offer a number of resources to its community including:
+ A Donation Hub inside its new store where visitors can drop off essential goods, like clothing, bedding, toiletries and nonperishable food items.
+ Design Community Engagement in which the brand creates a space for local designers, architects and other industry professionals to gather and collaborate on rebuilding efforts. In addition to hosting workshops, there will be open studio hours to “foster creativity and support the design community that is being heavily impacted by the fires.”
+ Donation Match – Teak New York will run a social media campaign around #DesigningForACause to highlight the initiative and encourage others to donate. It also will match donations made in-store.
And Los Angeles-based nursery furniture brand Babyletto is offering free replacement cribs to those who have lost homes and/or a crib in the fires. On its Instagram page, the company said that families in need can claim the offer by contacting the brand directly at info@babyletto.com.
