Weir’s Furniture to close its doors after nearly 80 years in business

The Dallas-based retailer is shuttering its online and brick-and-mortar operations

DALLAS — It’s always a sad day when venerable furniture retailers announce they’re going out of business, particularly when it is one that has been operating for decades. Texas-based Weir’s Furniture announced earlier this week that it will be closing after 78 years in business.

An announcement from Weir’s explained that the retailer decided to close “after exploring all reasonable alternatives and careful evaluation of its long-term financial position, difficult market conditions and operational challenges.” The board “determined that the company cannot continue operating sustainably.”

Weir’s closure marks the end of a significant retail presence in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In today’s challenging retail landscape, shaped by tariffs, increased competition and softened consumer demand, particularly for home furnishings and big-ticket purchases, many legacy businesses are seeing shrinking profitability.

According to an article written by Brian Womack for The Dallas Morning News, Weir’s liquidation sales started Thursday, March 26. Once all the merchandise is sold, the retailer will shut down permanently.

“This was an extremely difficult decision, but closing now enables us to honor J. Ray and Bea’s legacy by finishing well and taking care of our employees,” Al Boulden, board chairman of Weir’s Furniture, said in a statement.

Weir’s Furniture was founded on March 19, 1948, when J. Ray Weir and Bea Weir opened Weir’s Furniture Co. in a 20-foot-by-70-foot space on Knox Street in Dallas. Weir’s son, Dan Weir, took charge of the company in 1972, and in 2003, J. Ray Weir’s nephew, Mark Moore, became its new CEO. Following Moore’s retirement, Dirk Smith became CEO in 2024, notably the first non-Weir family member to be in that role.

Over the decades, the retailer expanded to four locations in the Dallas metropolitan area: Plano (opened in 1999), Southlake (opened in 2007) and North Dallas (opened in 2011). In 2022, its original Knox Street store underwent a $155 million renovation to become Weir’s Plaza, a mixed-use development with Weir’s occupying the first two floors.

In May 2025, Weir’s was included on Home News Now’s Top 125 Furniture and Bedding Retailers. Ranked at No. 105 overall, Weir’s Furniture reported $57.7 million in sales in 2024.

A statement on Weir’s website thanked its customers, employees, vendors and partners and the Dallas-Fort Worth community for their support over the years, and in part read: “For nearly eight decades, we have believed that home is more than just a place — it’s where memories are made, families gather and lives are lived with purpose and joy.”

The statement continued: “As we close this chapter, we carry forward memories of decades of relationships built on trust and shared purpose. Our gratitude for your support is immeasurable, and we are humbled that you chose Weir’s time and again. Although the doors may be closing, the impact of your support — and the legacy of faith, service and integrity that have defined Weir’s — will remain with us forever.”
