AI can improve many areas for furniture retailers and help boost profits

Here we are with a new year, new challenges and new opportunities staring us directly in our eyes.

Last year, at least in my mind, was no walk in the park, and odds are the early months of 2025 will be challenging as well, for furniture retailers and perhaps even more so for smaller, independent retailers.

But the good news is that in today’s retail area, technology can level the playing field and provide the clout for smaller retailers to punch well above their weight.

One such tool is artificial intelligence. Independent furniture retailers who make the investment to understand and embrace AI can improve many areas of their businesses, boost levels of efficiency, strengthen customer experience and ultimately boost profitability.

Here are several ways this can be done.

Retailers can use AI to analyze customer preferences and to suggest personalized furniture recommendations based on browsing history, purchase behavior or even social media activity. This can lead to higher conversion rates by offering products that are more likely to resonate with each shopper.

AI-powered tools can allow customers to visualize how different furniture pieces will look in their homes. Customers can upload photos of their rooms and see a 3D rendering with different furniture options, which helps them make quicker purchasing decisions.

AI can help you predict future trends and customer demands based on historical sales data, current trends, seasonality and even macroeconomic factors. This allows retailers to better optimize inventory, reduce overstocking or stock outs, and cut storage costs.

You can also use AI for automated replenishment. It can help you automate your restocking process, ensuring that your popular items are always in stock, while less popular items are reduced or eliminated from inventory, which will minimize waste and save you money.

AI can also help you to automatically adjust prices based on factors like demand, competitive pricing, stock levels, etc. This allows you to maximize margins without risking customer churn.

AI can help retailers predict how changes in price could impact customer demand and sales volume, which can aid retailers in finding their optimal price points for different segments and markets for customer service organization.

AI-powered chat bots on websites and in-store kiosks can help answer customer questions, assist with product discovery, track orders and even guide customers through the buying process. This improves efficiency and ultimately, profitability.

Retailers wanting to ensure a 24/7 service experience should consider voice search. Integrating AI-powered voice recognition into websites or mobile apps can help customers search for products or get recommendations hands free, which has the potential to increase engagement and sales.

Savvy retailers can use AI to help analyze customer data and identify trends, segment, audiences and create marketing campaigns.

It can also determine the best time to send offers, which products to promote and to also pinpoint which marketing channels can be most effective.

AI tools can help automate e-mail campaigns, which will ensure that they’re personalized based on customer preferences. Social media ads can also be targeted more effectively by analyzing customer behaviors and demographic data, ensuring return on investment and marketing spend.

AI can analyze global design trends, consumer behavior and social media content to predict furniture styles and customer preferences. This allows you, the independent retailer, to stay ahead of the curve, in part, by offering products that will resonate more soundly with your local market.

You can also tap into AI for supply chain optimization and to optimize delivery routes, reducing cost and improving delivery time.

You may also want to think of creating a smart showroom. Consumers have smartphones, why not a smart showroom? Using AI-powered displays and interactive touch points, physical stores can engage customers in a more immersive shopping experience.

AI can also help tracking store behavior to better understand your customer preferences and adjust product placement accordingly.

You can use AI to process customer reviews, social media mentions and survey responses to gauge sentiment and identify areas for improvement in product offerings, customer service or marketing.

Finally, consider using AI to help you with your after-sales support. Once a customer has made a purchase, AI can be used to automate after-sales support including follow-up emails, feedback requests or satisfaction surveys. It can also suggest complementary product of furniture.

By incorporating AI across these various touch points, customer experience, supply chain, marketing, pricing and inventory, independent furniture retailers can not only optimize operations but also provide value to customers and encourage repeat business.

This can lead to better margins, higher sales and more loyal customers. All contributing to greater profitability and an increasingly competitive market.

Next time I’m going to talk about some of the potential obstacles to implementing AI and how to minimize them.
