Manufacturer of customizable closet systems will invest $30 million in renovation of former Sara Lee plant in Kernersville
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — A manufacturer of customizable closet systems announced this week that it is investing $30 million in a facility here that will serve as its primary manufacturing operations and create 100 new jobs.
Modular Closets said it is moving its main production from New Jersey to Kernersville where it will occupy a building on the 700 block of North Main Street that was previously a Sara Lee manufacturing plant.
Renovations on the new space are expected to begin in early 2026, and the operation is expected to create 100 jobs in its first year, including 50 jobs in its first quarter of operations. These will include a mix of on-site, hybrid and remote work positions for area workers.
In addition to being its primary manufacturing facility, the company said, the operation will support its national distribution operations and e-commerce business.
“We’re thrilled to call North Carolina home,” said Bernard Warman, chief executive officer of Modular Closets. “Kernersville offers an ideal location with a skilled workforce, supportive business environment and vibrant community. This move will help us scale production, reduce delivery times and continue offering high-quality, affordable closet solutions to our customers nationwide.”
The company noted that the move is further evidence of its “long-term commitment to domestic manufacturing, a strategy that has allowed the company to thrive even amid global trade disruptions.”
The company was founded in 2015, producing a product that provides solutions for custom closet organization that features shelf, drawer and hanging clothes storage. It began importing closet systems from overseas, but onshored its production operations in 2020 once it learned to produce its own closet organization solutions in-house.
The company added that it “quickly realized the long-term benefits of U.S.-based manufacturing, particularly in this era of Trump tariffs that has reshaped global supply chains. This early move positioned Modular Closets to strengthen its control over production, stabilize costs and ensure steady growth amid international trade shifts.”
“While many companies have shifted production overseas, Modular Closets is proud to continue building its products right here in America,” Warman added. “We believe U.S. manufacturing is a cornerstone of quality and reliability, and this investment in North Carolina reflects our long-term commitment to American jobs and craftsmanship.”
